Health Equity

At Fidelis Care, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to live a healthy life. It’s our mission to ensure New Yorkers have access to high-quality healthcare, so they can get the care they need when they need it.

But many other factors contribute to an individual’s health and wellness beyond access to healthcare. Socioeconomic conditions can influence health risks and outcomes. Poverty, food insecurity, housing instability, education, employment, access to transportation and other circumstances contribute to health disparities among underserved and vulnerable populations.

Fidelis Care is committed to removing those barriers to health to improve access, quality, and affordability. It is an ongoing process that requires working together with our members, providers, and community-based organizations to support fair and just opportunities to equal access to healthcare.

Key partnerships

Wellness commitment to Buffalo Urban League

To nurture social entrepreneurship, facilitate wellness, and strengthen organizations focused on Black, Indigenous and People of Color in Buffalo’s East Side, Fidelis Care and the Centene Foundation donated $1.1 million to the Buffalo Urban League (BUL) to help establish its new headquarters and develop a Wellness and Entrepreneurial Center.

In addition, Fidelis Care partners with BUL through community programs and at events held in the city focused on health, family support and stabilization services, foster care, adoption, education, job training, employment, scholarships, and more.

Mental health alliance with The Jed Foundation

As part of our behavioral health efforts, Fidelis Care and the Centene Foundation awarded $1.1 million to The Jed Foundation (JED) to protect the mental health of New York State’s youth.

Through the funding, JED will expand its current services, providing at least five youth-serving community-based organizations (CBOs) with consultation or strategic planning services, including expert guidance, educational workshops, and training programs, equipping young people with life skills and connecting them to mental healthcare when they are in distress.

Men’s Health Month: Making Wellness a Priority
6/3/2025 • Posted by Dr. Arik Olson, Fidelis Care Physician in Health and Wellness, Men's Health

men taking exercise class

Men’s Health Month in June is an excellent time to remind the men in our lives to focus on their wellness.

It’s important for men to have a primary care provider and to get a checkup every year, even if they feel well. Many men don’t see a doctor unless they really need to. Men often say they feel fine, are too busy, or will get around to it “sometime.”

It can be difficult to take time to see a doctor just for a checkup even though it can help lead to a healthier, longer life. Doctors don’t always have time for a preventive care conversation during a sick visit, so it’s best to make an appointment for a routine visit every year.

There are forms of preventive care that can help keep men healthy.  Your doctor is the best expert to guide you through what really works and what is best to avoid. Don’t believe what you may read on social media about supplements, body scans, or genetic tests. These can often be scams. Get advice straight from your doctor.

Cholesterol and blood pressure tests, getting vaccines to prevent pneumonia and the flu, and colon cancer screenings can also help men stay healthy as they get older.

Did you know that the health of your teeth and gums can also affect your overall health? It’s important to take good care of your teeth by brushing twice a day, flossing every day, and seeing a dentist for a cleaning and exam at least once or twice a year. Many Fidelis Care health plans have a dental insurance benefit, and we encourage you to use it.

There are also other things that men can do to stay healthy. Maintain and build social connections with other people. This is more important as we get older. Find activities where you can see the same group of people on a regular basis.

Get some form of exercise every day. It doesn’t matter much what type of exercise you get, if you are active in some way. Find an activity that you enjoy. It could be a daily walk, working outside in the garden, a sports group, or time at a gym. Some Fidelis Care plans offer gym membership reimbursements to help with the cost.

Eat fruits and vegetables every day. Avoid large amounts of “carbs” like rice, bread, potatoes, or junk food. If you smoke, get help to quit. The NYS Quit Line website and hotline at 1-888-NY-QUITS is a great resource. Avoid drugs and excess alcohol and ask for help to stop or cut down. Don’t drive after drinking or using drugs or medications that could make you sleepy.

As we observe Men’s Health Month, my main message is to see your doctor once a year to get their suggestions for what can help you stay healthy. Your doctor can guide you based on their understanding of your conditions and own personal health risks.
