Trouble Keeping Track of Medications? Try These 4 Strategies

Medications work best when taken as prescribed. But when life gets busy, or your health worsens, it can be hard to stay on track on your own – especially if you take more than one medication.

If you’re having trouble, or need help remembering to take your medications, try these doctor and pharmacist-approved strategies:

Take your medication at the same time each day. Time it with something that’s already part of your daily routine, such as brushing your teeth, or going to bed.

Use calendar reminders. Write down in your calendar when you take your medication. Also, put reminder notes on your calendar a week before your medicine is due to run out, so you know when to refill your prescription. If you use a digital calendar, such as the calendar on your smartphone, you can create alarms and/or push notifications for these reminders.

Use Post-its or index cards. Write reminder notes on them and place on your refrigerator, medicine cabinet, or bathroom mirror.

Use a pill organizer. Weekly pill organizers allow you to arrange all of your dosages for an entire week in one sitting. Remember to leave at least one pill in the bottle, so you’ll be able to tell your pills from one another.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about how to take your medications.
