Did you know that heat is the leading weather-related killer in the United States? Most heat-related deaths are preventable. This summer, Fidelis Care is sharing ways to stay safe and healthy in the heat and sun. Stay Protected Drink plenty of water. Don't wait until you are thirsty to drink. In the hot summer months, it is recommended that women drink about 11.5 cups of water per day, and men should drink around 15.5 cups per day. Wear sunscreen. Fidelis Care is encouraging parents and caregivers to schedule well child visits and to keep their children up to date with required immunizations ahead of the 2024-25 school year. To help spread the word, Fidelis Care has partnered statewide with organizations such as the Erie County Department of Health, Fulton County Public Health,  Monroe County Department of Public Health,  Madison County Health Department, the Batavia City School District, Allegany County Department of Health, Monroe County Medical Society, and New York State PTA, among others. As we spend time outdoors this summer, Fidelis Care is sharing ways to help enjoy pest-free outdoor living. Use insect repellent. Ticks and mosquitoes carry diseases and can cause serious health risks. Apply insect repellent to your skin and clothing to lower your risk. Remove or avoid standing water. Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. Lower your chances of being bitten by removing standing water (birdbaths, ponds, and planters) from your backyard or shared spaces. Keep grass short. Mosquitoes and ticks like overgrown grass. Clear away leaf piles and fallen branches. Keeping grass short can help prevent mosquitoes and ticks

In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Fidelis Care visited partner New Choices Recovery Center, an alcohol and drug treatment facility in Schenectady, and talked with Clinical Coordinator Meagan Rivers, LMHC, NCC, CCTP.
