History is made of fine details that form a much larger picture. These intricate lines and strokes shape who we are. February commemorates the rich Black history that has allowed me to stand in my achievements today. This month reminds me of my mission: to pour into my community.
I cannot simply tell you how I observe this month, because in many ways, I am it. I am the product of hundreds of years of sacrifice, trust, resilience, and community that Black Americans have embodied. In recognizing these sacrifices, I want to share how this month directly aligns with the work

In 2026, we honor the 100th anniversary of the very first Negro History Week, created in 1926 by historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson. This important week later grew into what we now call Black History Month. Dr. Woodson wanted to make sure that the achievements and stories of Black Americans were recognized, taught, and celebrated across the United States.
Dr. Woodson chose February for this observance because it includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln. African-American communities had already honored these leaders for many years, and Woodson hoped the new celebration would build on these traditions.
Over time, more

Every year on the third Monday in January, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who fought for justice and equality for all. His dream wasn’t just about civil rights, it was also about making sure everyone has the same chance to live a healthy life.
Dr. King once said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhuman.” He saw that many people, especially in poor and minority communities, didn’t have access to good healthcare. He believed that health is a basic human right.
Health equity means everyone should have a fair shot

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time of reflection, celebration, and unity. For me, it is deeply personal, a reminder of the strength, resilience, and cultural pride that defines our community. It is also a call to action to honor our heritage not only with words, but through efforts that uplift the health and well-being of Hispanic families across New York and beyond.
The Hispanic community carries a powerful legacy of hard work, faith, and family. Yet, despite our many strengths, we continue to face significant health challenges. Chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity are disproportionately prevalent among Hispanic populations.
