Back to School Basics

As summer comes to a close, families are getting ready for a new school year. Here are steps parents and caregivers can take to help children feel physically, emotionally, and mentally prepared for the year ahead.

Safety First

Whether walking, biking, or riding the bus, children should know how to get to and from school safely. Remind children to follow traffic signals, use crosswalks, and stay alert. Children who ride bikes should wear a properly fitted helmet. Reflective clothing or accessories can help children be seen when it is dark outside.

Younger children may need an adult to go with them, while older children can walk with friends or in groups. Tell children to put away cellphones and other distractions when crossing streets or traveling through busy areas.

Build Healthy Habits

Each day, plan nutritious meals and snacks, regular physical activity, and allow time for plenty of sleep.

As bedtime routines shift from summer schedules to school schedules, gradually move bedtime and wake-up times earlier to make the transition easier.

Children should also have time each day to be active, whether through sports, outdoor play, walking, or other activities they enjoy.

Schedule Annual Checkups

Back-to-school season is a good time to make sure children are up to date on their healthcare. Regular pediatric visits give families an opportunity to discuss immunizations, growth and development, nutrition, sleep, and other health concerns.

These visits can also help identify vision, hearing, dental, or developmental concerns that may affect a child's ability to learn and participate in school. Parents and caregivers should talk with their child's healthcare provider about any questions or concerns before the school year begins.

Mental Health Matters

Starting a new school year can bring excitement, but it can also bring worry. Children may feel anxious about a new teacher, new classmates, academic expectations, or changes in their daily routine.

Create opportunities for children to talk about how they are feeling and listen without judgment. Simple questions such as “What are you looking forward to?” or “Is there anything you're worried about?” can help open the conversation.

If anxiety or other emotional concerns persist or begin to interfere with a child's sleep, school attendance, relationships, or everyday activities, talk with a healthcare professional about additional support.

Establish Routines

Consistent routines can help children know what to expect and feel more prepared for the school day. Before school starts, families can establish regular times for waking up, meals, homework, physical activity, relaxation, and bedtime.

Preparing backpacks and clothes the night before can also make busy mornings easier. Most importantly, make time for family connection. Even a few minutes talking about the day over dinner or before bedtime can help children feel supported.
