Depression is one of the most common behavioral health conditions affecting adolescents and adults, yet many individuals remain undiagnosed and untreated. The Depression Screening and Follow-Up for Adolescents and Adults (DSF-E) measure highlights the importance of screening members for depression and ensuring appropriate follow-up when a screening result is positive.
Primary Care Providers are often the first point of contact for members and play a critical role in identifying behavioral health concerns early. Providers are encouraged to incorporate depression screening into every annual wellness visit, particularly for adolescents and young adults, as early identification can lead to timely intervention and improved outcomes.
A positive screening result is only the first step. Providers should ensure that members with a positive depression screening receive appropriate follow-up care and are connected to behavioral health services. Follow-up should occur within 30 days of the positive screening result and may include additional evaluation, treatment planning, referral to a behavioral health provider, or other clinically appropriate interventions.
Best Practices for Providers
- Incorporate depression screening into annual wellness visits.
- Use validated screening tools and document results.
- Discuss positive results with members in a supportive, nonjudgmental manner.
- Schedule or coordinate follow-up care within 30 days.
- Connect members to behavioral health services when appropriate.
