September is National Childhood Obesity Month. It's a time to address obesity rates among children in the U.S. Those rates have doubled since 1980 and have tripled for teens. About 19.7% of children ages 2 to 19 are considered obese. Children who take in too many calories and don't get enough exercise or sleep are at risk for obesity. Efforts to prevent obesity should begin early. Children who have obesity have a higher risk of developing various health conditions including: High blood pressure High cholesterol Type 2 diabetes Sleep apnea Non-alcohol-related fatty liver disease Obesity-related depression Prevention is important.
