In 2026, we honor the 100th anniversary of the very first Negro History Week, created in 1926 by historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson. This important week later grew into what we now call Black History Month. Dr. Woodson wanted to make sure that the achievements and stories of Black Americans were recognized, taught, and celebrated across the United States. Dr. Woodson chose February for this observance because it includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln. African-American communities had already honored these leaders for many years, and Woodson hoped the new celebration would build on these traditions. Over time, more

Every year on the third Monday in January, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who fought for justice and equality for all. His dream wasn’t just about civil rights, it was also about making sure everyone has the same chance to live a healthy life. From my experiences, my Black patients prefer Black physicians; however, there is a severe shortage of Black physicians, which is another barrier to seeking care for many Black Americans. Social determinants of health (SDoH) such as education,

February marks Black History Month. Historically, African Americans have been tremendous contributors to our country and achieved great strides in promoting diversity and inclusivity, despite facing many barriers.  I am very proud to be a part of the community and honored that there is a month dedicated to my heritage and our contributions.  Many African Americans have faced great disparities in healthcare, leading to higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and other conditions.  As an African American who has worked at Fidelis Care for 16 years, it’s my duty to serve the community in providing access to the best
