Suicide Prevention Awareness Month: Top Five Things You Can Do
10.09.2026 • Posted by The Jed Foundation

Too many teens and young adults struggle in silence with suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Often, these feelings are hidden, and concerns go unspoken, even when we sense someone is struggling. A caring conversation can make a real difference. That’s why Fidelis Care partners with The Jed Foundation (JED), a leading nonprofit that protects emotional health and prevents suicide for our nation’s teens and young adults.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and JED is here to help with resources and guidance. By joining JED’s It’s OK to Say Suicide campaign, you can make a difference. Here are JED’s top five tips for getting involved this September, and all year round:

  1. Learn the facts. Learn more about mental health and suicide among teens and young adults so you’re informed.
  2. Support someone you care about. If you’re worried that someone you care about is struggling or having thoughts about suicide, asking direct questions can go a long way toward getting them help.
  3. Talk openly about mental health and suicide. It’s OK to say suicide. In fact, talking openly about suicide can save lives. Having honest conversations about mental health struggles can open the door to connection, belonging, and getting on the path to help.
  4. Tell your story. Many people have a personal story about suicide, whether it’s a loved one or a story about your community. If you have a story to tell, sharing it safely online can be a way to help others feel more comfortable telling theirs or reaching out for help.
  5. Support suicide prevention work. Donating to organizations like The Jed Foundation can help bring lifesaving programs to young people and communities around the country.

You don’t have to do everything, but doing something can make an impact. That’s why in 2024, Fidelis Care and the Centene Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Centene Corporation, provided a $1.1 million grant to JED. This partnership allowed JED to bring their lifesaving work to youth-serving community-based organizations across New York State and ultimately across the U.S., helping them better support young people with suicide prevention and mental health strategies and programs.

Let’s work together to build a world where we can prevent suicide and protect the emotional well-being of young people across the nation.
