Start Small
You do not have to change everything at once. Choose one healthy habit to focus on this week and build from there. Over time, small, consistent steps can lead to better health, more energy, and greater well-being.

Healthy Aging Month in September is a time to think about building simple habits that help you stay active, connected, and independent. In observance of the month, here are some simple ways to support your health at every age.

Move Your Body Every Day
Regular movement supports strength, balance, heart health, and independence.

  • Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, such as brisk walking.
  • Add strength-building exercises at least twice a week.
  • Practice balance with activities like tai chi, heel-to-toe walking, or chair exercises.

Eat Healthy Foods
Nutritious foods help support your heart, brain, muscles, bones, and energy.

  • Fill your plate with vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
  • Include protein-rich foods such as fish, eggs, dairy, beans, or tofu.
  • Choose water, coffee, or tea instead of sugary drinks when possible.

Get Good Sleep
Quality sleep supports healing, memory, mood, and overall well-being. Most adults need seven to nine hours each night.

  • Keep a consistent sleep and wake schedule.
  • Avoid caffeine in the hours before bedtime.
  • Limit screen time before bed and talk with your doctor about ongoing sleep concerns.

Stay Connected
Strong social connections can benefit both mental and physical health.

  • Spend time with family, friends, neighbors, or community groups.
  • Volunteer, join a class, or participate in a hobby.
  • Stay in touch through phone calls or video chats if getting out is difficult.

Spend Time Outdoors
Getting outside can improve mood, reduce stress, and encourage physical activity.

  • Take a walk, visit a park, or spend time gardening.
  • Stay hydrated and protect your skin from the sun.
  • Explore indoor walking programs or at-home exercises if mobility is limited.

Take Care of Your Teeth
Good oral health is an important part of overall health.

  • Brush twice daily and floss every day.
  • Visit your dentist as recommended.
  • Limit sugary foods and drinks that can increase the risk of cavities.

Check Your Vision and Hearing
Vision and hearing changes can affect safety, communication, and quality of life.

  • Tell your provider about vision or hearing concerns.
  • Schedule regular eye exams and keep prescriptions up to date.
  • Consider a hearing check if you are having trouble following conversations.

Get a Yearly Checkup
Annual wellness visits help you stay on top of your health.

  • Review screenings, vaccines, and medications with your doctor.
  • Discuss fall prevention and any changes in your health.
  • Ask questions and create a plan for the year ahead.

Support Sobriety and Recovery
Healthy aging can include caring for your behavioral health and addressing substance use.

  • Stay connected to recovery supports that work for you.
  • Talk with your doctor before stopping alcohol or certain substances.
  • Seek help if substance use is affecting your health, relationships, or daily life.

No matter your age, it is never too late to build healthy habits that support a longer, healthier, and more active life.
