Bladder Control

Bladder training is a way to teach your bladder to empty on schedule, and it is an important part of improving bladder control.

To train your bladder:

  • Keep Track: For a few days, write down all the times you use the bathroom.
  • Set a Schedule: Based on how often you’ve been going, set a schedule with equal intervals between bathroom trips and stick to it. For example, every 45 minutes or every 60 minutes.
  • Gradually increase the time between trips: Try adding 15 minutes between trips until that time gap feels comfortable. Then, try adding 15 more minutes.

Over time, you may be able to teach your bladder to wait until it is full before you need to empty it. If you have bladder-control problems, speak with your primary care provider about bladder training.
