During National Men’s Health Month, Fidelis Care encourages all men to take steps towards prioritizing their health. Dr. Darius Paduch, a men’s health expert and in-network provider from Northwell Health, shares tips for making small changes and leading a healthier life.

June is National Men’s Health Month, and as we get ready to get back into our swim shorts and T-shirts – and spend time with our families – many of us will be upgrading our waist size by one or two inches. More than 50% of adults gained weight over last two years during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This includes a significant increase in the number of adolescent males who became obese. There is no question that sedentary lifestyle, social isolation, and working from home are contributing to an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol.

Some men do not like going to the doctor for routine care unless they experience a catastrophic event, like a heart attack. As an expert in men’s health, I often see men who have not been to the doctor since high school. The most common reason that men see me in my practice is fatigue and weight gain.

Physical activity of any type, 15 to 30 minutes a day and combined with weightlifting, increases muscle mass, improves lungs and heart performance, and stabilizes back muscles to prevent knees injuries. These are the common issue of middle-aged and older men.

So, friends, brothers, fathers, and patients, let’s use the next days in June to start taking care of ourselves and prioritizing our health. Get some good shoes for walking (for me it means my cowboy boots), put some lean meat on the grill, get your blood pressure checked, and see your friendly doc, who is there to help you. Don’ t worry – seeing a physician for an annual check-up does not mean you are getting old. It means that you want to stay in the best shape possible to play ball with your sons and daughters.
