Every Visit Is an Opportunity to Promote Women's Preventive Screenings
10/5/2026 • Posted by Provider Relations

Women's preventive screenings are essential for detecting health conditions early, improving outcomes, and supporting lifelong health. Whether discussing breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, colorectal cancer screening, or chlamydia screening, every patient encounter provides an opportunity to review preventive care needs and close gaps in care.

One area of ongoing concern is chlamydia screening, where screening rates continue to present challenges nationally and across health plans. Because chlamydia is often asymptomatic, many women may not realize they are at risk or understand the importance of routine screening. Providers can help address this gap by normalizing conversations about sexual health and incorporating screening discussions into annual wellness visits and other routine encounters.

It is equally important to discuss breast cancer screening with eligible patients. Current recommendations support beginning routine breast cancer screening at age 40, making it critical for providers to start conversations with women approaching this age milestone. These discussions can help prepare patients for screening, address concerns regarding mammography, and reinforce the importance of early detection. Providers should also review screening status with women who are overdue and help address barriers that may be preventing completion.

Many preventive screenings can be discussed during regular office visits, even when patients are being seen for unrelated concerns. Taking a few moments to review care gaps, educate patients on recommended screenings, and facilitate scheduling can have a meaningful impact on preventive care performance and patient outcomes.

By making preventive screening discussions a routine part of every encounter, providers can help patients better understand their health needs, reduce missed screening opportunities, and support early detection of conditions when they are most treatable., and support early detection of conditions when they are most treatable.
