Fighting Food Insecurity

Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap study shows more than 2.6 million New Yorkers, or 13.6% of the population, face food insecurity. The United States Department of Agriculture reports significant disparities, with higher rates among Black and Hispanic households.

Fidelis Care is committed to fighting food insecurity. Access to nutritious foods is a key way to improve health. Hunger can cause chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
We have several programs to help get healthy food to people in need. We partner with organizations and local farmers across New York. Some of our programs are:

Veggies to Go

Fidelis Care’s Veggies to Go program gives away bags of healthy fruits and vegetables to individuals and families in need across New York State. Veggies to Go addresses nutrition and food insecurity in partnership with local farmers and distributors statewide. The events also feature information on healthy eating, including Fidelis Care’s ‘Lunchology’recipe sheets.

Backpack Heroes

Backpack Heroes, launched in 2016, is an initiative designed to help fight weekend hunger coordinated by Fidelis Care, The Food Bank of Northeastern New York, and WRGB-Channel 6. Through the program, participating students receive backpacks full of food each Friday to help ensure they do not go hungry over the weekend when they are not in school. Each year, Backpack Heroes is supported by caring community members, whose donations help to fund the Food Bank’s Backpack Program. Over the past nine years, Backpack Heroes has raised over $715,000 for local Capital Region students.
