As summer comes to a close, families are getting ready for a new school year. Here are steps parents and caregivers can take to help children feel physically, emotionally, and mentally prepared for the year ahead. Safety First Whether walking, biking, or riding the bus, children should know how to get to and from school safely. Remind children to follow traffic signals, use crosswalks, and stay alert. Children who ride bikes should wear a properly fitted helmet. Reflective clothing or accessories can help children be seen when it is dark outside. May is National Stroke Awareness Month, a time to learn about stroke, its warning signs, and how it can be treated. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and a major cause of long-term disability. What is a stroke? A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is blocked or reduced. The brain needs oxygen to work. Without oxygen, brain cells can be damaged or die within minutes. Who is at risk for a stroke? Healthy aging is about making choices that support your body and mind to live a fulfilling life as you grow older. In observance of Healthy Aging Month, here are some simple, powerful tips to help you age well and feel your best: 1. Move Your Body Every Day Try to exercise every day. If you can, do strength training (like lifting light weights or using resistance bands) at least three times a week.

August is “Kids Eat Right Month.” It’s a time to encourage children to build healthy habits that can last a lifetime. With the school year approaching and routines shifting, it’s the perfect moment to pause and take a closer look at what our kids are eating—and how we can better support them. Healthy eating isn’t about strict rules or “perfect” meals. It’s about creating a balanced approach to food that fuels our children’s bodies and minds - one meal (and one snack!) at a time.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Each year, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer than with any other type of cancer. There are three types of skin cancer: basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma. They all require medical attention, but melanoma is the most serious as it is most likely to spread to other parts of the body.
