Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Your kidneys work hard every day to keep your body healthy. They filter waste and fluids, which are then removed in your urine. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) happens when the kidneys slowly lose their ability to do their job.

The good news? CKD can often be slowed, especially when it’s found early.

What is CKD?

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a long-term condition where the kidneys do not filter blood as well as they should. CKD usually develops slowly over time.

Many people with early CKD do not feel sick which is why regular checkups and lab tests are so important.

What causes CKD?

The most common causes are:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Family history of kidney disease
  • Being age 60 or older

Why early detection matters

When CKD is found early, your provider can:

  • Monitor your kidney function
  • Adjust medications
  • Help you control blood pressure and blood sugar
  • Prevent complications

Managing Your Health

Living with CKD means taking steps every day to protect your kidneys.

Manage Your Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a leading cause of kidney damage.

  • Take your medications exactly as prescribed
  • Limit salt (sodium)
  • Stay physically active
  • Check your blood pressure at home if advised

Controlling blood pressure helps prevent kidney failure and supports overall heart health.

Manage Your Diabetes

If you have diabetes:

  • Keep blood sugar in your target range
  • Get your A1C checked as recommended
  • Follow your provider’s nutrition guidance

Good blood sugar control protects both your kidneys and your heart.

Take Medications as Prescribed

Some medications help slow kidney damage. Others may need dose adjustments if you have CKD.

Always:

  • Take medications as directed
  • Do not skip doses
  • Ask before taking over-the-counter pain relievers (some can harm kidneys)
Eat for Kidney Health

Your provider may recommend:

  • Lower sodium foods
  • Limiting processed foods
  • Managing protein intake
  • Watching potassium or phosphorus (if advised)

Take Action Early

Taking small steps today can help protect your kidneys for years to come.

Talk to your provider about:

  • Kidney blood and urine tests
  • Blood pressure checks
