Substance Use Prevention Month: Breaking the Silence
9/26/2025 • Posted by Erik M. Lantier, Fidelis Care Director, Care Management in Health and Wellness, Mental Health

Substance use disorder (SUD) affects many people. It can happen in any family, workplace, or neighborhood. At Fidelis Care, we believe alcohol or drug addiction is not a personal failure. We also know that people need help, not judgment.

Why Prevention Matters
Addiction often starts quietly. It can begin with stress, trauma, or mental health problems that aren’t treated. That’s why we focus on stopping addiction before it starts. We look for warning signs early. We help people get care that respects their culture and background. We also build support systems with family, friends, and the community.

Teaching kids and parents is important too. Tools like the SAMHSA Toolkit help schools and families learn how drug use connects to depression and suicide. They also give tips to help before things get worse.

Getting Help Saves Lives
In 2023, over 107,000 people died from drug use. But only a small number of people who need help actually get it. Even fewer get care that is kind and based on science. Our team wants to change that. We support:

  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) – using medication to help people recover.
  • Mental health checks – to find and treat other problems.
  • Peer support – people in recovery helping others.
  • Care coordination – helping people find housing, rides, and sober support.

Fighting Stigma
This year, we started the End the Stigma of Addiction Campaign. It helps people talk openly about addiction and recovery. We teamed up with Shatterproof, a national organization dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in the United States, to spread the word. This year, we’ll join Walk to End Addiction Stigma in New York and other places. These walks honor those we’ve lost, support those in recovery, and show that healing is possible.

We’re Here for You
We know asking for help takes courage. We support each other and believe everyone deserves respect, hope, and care. If you or someone you love is struggling, you are not alone. Recovery is real. We’re here to help.
