Mental Illness Awareness Week: Why Mental and Physical Health Go Hand in Hand

Mental Illness Awareness Week is a time to learn how mental health affects every part of our lives, including our physical health. People living with serious mental illness often face big challenges when it comes to staying healthy. Many don’t get regular checkups or see a doctor when they need to. This can lead to health problems that go unnoticed and untreated.

At Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), we know that taking care of both the mind and body is key to living a longer, healthier life. That’s why we’ve added new services to help our clients get the medical care they need.

Thanks to a grant from Fidelis Care, we now have a Patient Navigator, someone who helps clients make doctor appointments, find transportation, gather medical records, and fill out paperwork. This person works closely with our nurses, care teams, and community partners to make sure each client gets full support.

Many people with mental illness don’t have a regular doctor or get yearly checkups. This can be dangerous. Studies show that people with serious mental illness live 10 to 25 years less than others, and 60% of these early deaths are caused by medical problems, not mental health issues alone.

Our Patient Navigator helps close this gap. Once a client is referred to a doctor, the Navigator helps with every step, from scheduling the visit to making sure records are shared. This makes it easier for clients to stay on track with their health.

Founded in 1943, Westchester Jewish Community Services is one of the largest human service agencies in Westchester County. We help nearly 20,000 people each year, of all ages and backgrounds, who face challenges like mental illness, trauma, substance use, disabilities, and more. Our four Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics offer mental health care, job support, peer counseling, and help with housing, food, and legal needs.

One of the ways Fidelis Care prioritizes quality is making sure you are satisfied with your experiences. Our annual Provider Satisfaction Survey identifies areas to focus on for further improvement in the coming year. The Provider Relations Department works diligently to identify an action plan to address areas of improvement, while continuing to develop actions and interventions to improve the provider experience.
